Knitting once again continues

I had been knitting mittens and socks for a few months when the Chicago festival season was upon us.  On a beautiful Saturday I set off to the Printer’s Row Bookfair (now has a new name but I prefer the old one.)  My son and I had lunch in a local pub and then set off for more wandering through books.  As I stepped out of the pub, my son (one who had mittens and socks knitted by me) says “Aren’t you going into that yarn store?”   Of course I was–now that it was pointed out to me.  I ended spending more on yarn than I did on books that day.  More importantly I bought a pattern for a stuffed elephant–

perfect for my grandchild.  This led to also knitting

a bunny and then a winter hat–all patterns from the person I met in the yarn store that day.  I also found more sock yarn to add to my yarn “stash”.

…. more knitting ventures to come…

Knitting…once again

Knitting has again become a favorite hobby of mine. Years ago I made sweaters for me, my husband and my sons.  I made complicated “ski” sweaters.  I even made matching ones for my sons and their dad.   I made some great “Owl” potholders.  Soon I ran out of people to make sweaters for and besides it was hard to make the sweaters fit right.  I got busy with life (4 children, work, other hobbies).

Fast forward 30 years or so.  I wandered into a yarn store with a friend one day a year ago.   A friend had told me he made his own wool mittens and how warm they were.  I decided to make myself some mittens.  I made a pair for me, and then a pair for my adult son–after he promised me he would wear them.  (And he does!)

The yarn store was close to where I worked, so it was a good place to visit during lunch hour.  Next visit I saw some beautiful striped wool socks.  My kids had already convinced me of the advantages of buying good wool socks–even at their high price.  (My children have taught me a lot–seriously.)   I figured I could make my own socks for the same price and pursue my hobby at the same time.  I have long feet and manufactured socks generally do not fit well–even the expensive wool ones.  This was a practical hobby now.  I am addicted to knitting socks–10 pairs and counting–including one pair for the son with the wool mittens .   I am threatening my other sons with socks in the near future.  Stay tuned for more…
